RSS Usability Problems And Solutions
Posted by Jon in WordPress RSS on November 20, 2009
RSS is a family of web-feed formats that is used for web syndication. It can also be used by news websites, weblogs and podcasting, among others. The acronym can refer to various standards such as Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0), Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91 and RSS 1.0) and the RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and RSS 1.0)
RSS Backgrounder
Several similar formats already existed for syndication before RSS, but none was able to achieve widespread popularity or are still in common use today like it. This is primarily due to the fact that most were envisioned to work only within a single service. The RDF Site Summary which is the first version of RSS was created for use on the My Netscape portal. This eventually became known as RSS 0.9. A prototype that simplified the format and incorporated parts of a new scripting news format was produced in response to comments and suggestions made to the existing version. It was considered an interim measure as an RSS 1.0 like format was suggested through the so-called Futures Document.
The format was left without an owner when Netscape lost interest. Since it is becoming widely used, a working group and mailing list was set by various users and XML notables to continue its development. An RSS fork was created when two companies claimed ownership of the existing RSS.
A format grouped under an RSS 0.92 heading contained incremental changes to the existing format. Meanwhile, another group went on to produce RSS 1.0 which was based on RDF specifications but was more modular. When the RSS 0.92 was released, it contained minor and supposedly compatible set of changes to RSS 0.91. A subsequent draft was published for RSS 0.93 and RSS 0.94 by the same creator. RSS 0.93 was almost identical to 0.92 while the 0.94 reverted changes made in 0.93 and added a type attribute to the description element.
A final successor to the RSS 0.92 known as RSS 2.0 was released in September 2002 which emphasized “Really Simple Syndication” as the meaning of the three-letter acronym. It removed the type attribute added in RSS 0.94 and allowed users to add extension element using XML namespaces. Although several versions of it were released, the version number of the document model remained unchanged.
The adoption of the RSS format by New York Times became the starting point for such a format to becoming a standard. This format enabled it to offer its readers the ability to subscribe to RSS news feeds related to various topics. The RSS 2.0 specification was assigned ownership to Harvard’s Berkman Center for the Internet and Society. The creation of the new format and the raising of the version number were criticized and were answered with the creation of RSS 3.0, which is a non-XML textual format. It was only intended as a parody and very few implementations were made.
A preliminary draft of RSS 1.1 was produced to fix 1.0 by removing little-used features, simplifying the syntax and improving the specification based on the more recent RDF specifications. However, such work eventually became a mere academic exercise. RSS 1.1 never prospered.
Apple Computer, Inc. released Safari 2.0 with built-in RSS Feeds capabilities. It delivered the ability to read RSS feeds and bookmark them while having built-in search features. An independent project intended to create RSS 3 failed to gain backing from anyone in the industry.
Microsoft proposed its Simple Sharing Extensions to RSS, informally named Real Simple Synchronization. Together with the Outlook team, it eventually announced the adoption of the feed icon first used in the Mozilla Firefox browser. This effectively made the orange square with white radio waves the industry standard for both RSS and related formats such as Atom. Opera followed suit when they added the orange square in the release of Opera 9. The start of 2006 saw the re-launching of the RSS Advisory Board to work for the further development of the RSS format.
Usability Problems and Solutions
One of the major problems in RSS usability is the absence of consistency in the manner of subscribing. Some sites use the RSS icon such as the orange XML icon but other sites don’t have any icon but instead use words such as subscribe, feed or web-feed. There are even sites that don’t have any icon or word with any link at all. Still there are sites that use different icons for RSS. One offered solution is putting a text link in very small type at the bottom of the page which may prove to be unsatisfying to say the least. Another is sticking out with the orange XML icon as it tends to stand-out and have a link next to it describing what the RSS is and how to use it.
It can be very difficult when a browser starts spewing undecipherable code after clicking an orange button with an unfamiliar acronym. Apple has recently come out with the Safari to handle RSS feeds or send it off to a chosen aggregator. A look into the Safari’s preferences at the RSS pane will reveal a dropdown menu for setting which application is desired as default news aggregator.
It is important to make software usable. Usability then was all about computer-human interaction and a lot of software remain as such. However, the Internet has given rise to new software that centers on the interaction between humans. This has been seen in discussion groups, social networking, on-line classified ads and of course, the e-mail which are all softwares that mediate between people. In this case, social interface is equally important.
RSS or news feeds in general, is like getting a subscription to a magazine except that there is no need to regularly check for new issues to come out. Through RSS, the user is informed about sites which are particularly being watched instead of checking a dozen or hundred of websites everyday. This technology is very useful but there seems to be an information overload prevailing in the system.
Some suggested solutions include visualization or collaborative filtering through smart search terms. The solution is about identifying the echoes and grouping them. When RSS readers collect updates, these results to so many unread items which make it very difficult to determine which one to read first. There are a few things to remember when subscribing to feeds. It is impossible to read everything even if all your time is devoted to reading. Even contents of a limited number of feeds may involve a lot of reading. It is important to know how to use the RSS technology before it manages to drown the user and render it useless.
Word Press Design And Themes – Design Solutions For Your Word Press Website
Posted by Jon in WordPress Themes on October 27, 2009
If you are not familiar with word press themes and designs then it can be a problem for you to look for them on the internet. Basic searches of on the search engines can help you to find a lot of websites which can help you with word press design and themes but finding a suitable word press design for your website can be a problem. This is because most of the websites that are offering the word press design and themes do no have advanced search criteria.
This means that you can only search by category, design and color of the word press theme. This may sound a lot to you but believe me that the number of search results that you will get will be impossible to search in again. It means that your search will return with a lot of results and it will be very difficult for you to look for a word press design and theme in all the search results that suits your website best.
In addition to these problems the theme that you would download will also include another link. These links are the paid advertisements which offer different deals on different things. The problematic things about these add link is that, they are provided in the side bar or in the footer. Thought these links are not hard to remove from the theme but still they look strange at first sight. One of the biggest problems with most of the websites that are providing the word press design and themes is that, there is no back link to the maker of the theme.
This means that there is no link to the homepage of the link so this means that you will have idea whether the theme is working correctly in your version of word press or not. Another problem with not having the homepage link is that, you will not know whether the theme has any updates or not.
.
So make sure that you always choose a website which has all the above mentioned information with them so that you will not have any problems with your WordPress. These tips will help you to find the best design solutions for your word press website.
Lionheart Assurance Solutions Warns And Offers Advice On How To Avoid Identity Scams on MySpace
Posted by Jon in WordPress YouTube on October 21, 2009
Lionheart Assurance Solutions says learning how to avoid Myspace ID theft scams, frauds and ripoffs is a growing concern among Myspace users and it is of an important concern because it is now one of the #1 ways hackers and online cheats steal Net users’ identity.
How to avoid identity scams and fraud on MySpace and other social networking sites is something that teenagers and young adults should know about before opening their accounts. Many users of the site the world over have complained about impostors making profiles as well as some people building hate sites and stealing pictures or identities. If you want to protect yourself from identity theft and other online crimes committed on MySpace, you should follow the guidelines listed below.
At first, some teenagers believe that having impostors steal their pictures and identities is kind of cool. However, when cyber identity thieves start to use stolen photos and identities to rip-off money from the victim’s friends and family, many realize that knowing how to avoid identity scams and rip-offs on MySpace and other social networking sites is very important. The first thing that people should remember is that once you post something online, anyone can have access to that thing if you are not careful. Thus, teenagers and other Net users should remember not to post their private photos and things that they don’t want other people to see in file sharing and social media sites.
Another important tip on how to avoid identity scams and ripoffs on MySpace and similar sites is to be careful with what you put in your profile. It is important that vital information that can be used to open your personal account, access your credit card and stalk you in your home or school should not be posted online. This means that you should not make your residence address, mobile phone number, social security number, school name, or even your birth date visible on your MySpace account. Teenagers should also not divulge information about their siblings, parents or other data that scam artists and criminals online can use. This will only expand the threat posed to your family and even possibly the complaints of your friends.
Millions of teens and adults use websites such as YouTube to help make known to the public that impostors have taken and used their profiles, names and photos. Although this can probably help clean up your name or reputation, these measures are not very effective in thwarting identity thefts or scams being perpetrated by cyber crooks and criminals. So, always make sure that you are on the safe side – away from the rip-offs.
Data Security Solutions

‘Take an information-centric view of security’
On one side digitization of information is providing quicker access and easy sharing using the information technology (IT) platform, while on the other side, it further demands great control and management of information.
Today, the rising incidents of unauthorized information access, data thefts or ineffectiveness of security mechanisms to protect information has raised major concerns among enterprises and organizations. Seclore Technologies’ CEO, Vishal Gupta talks to Pankaj Maru of Cyber Media News about information digitization and its changing dimensions, evolving information threats or risks, information security mechanism in the recessionary times and much more. Excerpts:
Digitization of information or data has completely changed the information dimensions and also the way it is used and managed today. Do you think the information digitization has brought in an entirely different perspective on information’s risk, its security and management, particularly at the enterprise level?
Absolutely. The methods to contain information risks before and after digitization are completely different. Before digitization, physical access control to information was the only method of its security. Examples of such are large document vaults which still exist in some pharmaceutical companies and law firms. With digitization and the collaboration that it brings, access control methods are rendered ineffective since replication and transmission of information is easy.
Consequently, any system which restricts access, replication or transmission quickly becomes ineffective due to new methods coming for the same purpose. There is no option but to take an information-centric view of security and ensure that security is built into the information itself instead of the infrastructure around it.
Which are the evolving threats or risks about information? And how can it be managed using IT?
Risks of information breaches are continuously evolving like a ‘cops-and-robbers’ game, i.e. you mitigate one risk and another one springs up. Also the solutions to problems typically become the problem themselves after a while. Amongst the largest threats today are risks associated with “internal employee or partner” data breach (Blog reference) as well as risks associated with the rapidly vanishing “enterprise perimeter”.
Most security systems today, like firewalls, UTMs etc, do not take care of “internal” resources being the cause of an information breach. The only way to mitigate such risks is to have an “information-centric” policy for usage, i.e. define and implement a policy for information usage which is dependent on the “as-of-now” relationship between the owner of information and its user.
Also, these usage rights should be dynamic, i.e. if the genuine need for the “recipient” to use the information has expired or the business relationship between the owner and the recipient changes, then it should be possible to “withdraw” the usage rights to that information.
Seclore’s products such as Seclore FileSecure and Seclore InfoSource provide exactly these controls to individuals and enterprises. Seclore FileSecure allows users (owners) of information to control WHO (people, groups, etc) can use the information, WHAT (view, edit, print, forward, etc) can they do with the information, WHEN (dates, timespans, etc) can they use the information and WHERE (within the office, at home, etc) can they use the information.
Seclore InfoSource allows enterprises looking to outsource key business process to external agencies (BPO/KPO) to retain control over information shared with the agencies, while not hindering the agencies’ capability to perform. This is specially useful in any kind of cross-border data flow.
Budget constraints, especially for IT, has become a major issue today. In the Indian context, how are the local organizations and enterprises evaluating the significance of information security mechanisms and IT budgets constraints?
The need for information security has not gone away; the budgets to support large initiatives have, however, reduced considerably. Considering this, information security companies should look at a partnership model with customers which can allow security initiatives to progress with a “pay as you use” commercial model.
Some of the largest enterprises are coming around to this model, which I believe will not only define security initiatives but also generic software initiatives. At Seclore, we have introduced exactly this model which will allow us to become a partner in the customers business and its security.

Lionheart Assurance Solutions Offers Series On How to Avoid Identity Theft Scams on Twitter
Posted by Jon in WordPress Twitter on October 18, 2009
Discovering how to avoid identity theft on Twitter and other social media is becoming a growing concern for countless of people who have profiles on and participate in social networking sites. As people continue to enjoy interacting with friends and meeting other Net users, social networking sites such as Twitter will continue to flourish and bloom. However, as such sites grow in popularity they also become a new phishing ground for cheating cyber criminals and identity thieves. To protect yourself from scams and other online fraud, you have to put up some serious security measures. Read on and take the time to learn how to educate and protect yourself, your family and friends from ripoff.
The first thing that you need to do on how to avoid identity theft on Twitter and other social media is to keep in mind that the Internet is a public place. Although social networking websites are trying their best to protect the privacy of their members, there will always be ways in which criminals would be able to find out how to take advantage of the flaws in the social media system. Thus, it is important to be careful with what you post and include in your Twitter and other social media accounts.
Aside from identity theft, cyber squatting and making scam impostor accounts are also very popular these days. Many people have already found that there are individuals who are using their pictures and other information for cheating other people or staging scams that ripoff either the identity owner or his or her friends and family. If you think that other people are using your name, pictures and even email address to do unlawful things on social sites be sure to file your complaints with the site administrator. This may not be the surest way on how to avoid identity theft on Twitter and other social media, but it will surely do the trick in removing the impostor’s profile and page on the social networking sites involved.
Lastly, beware of clipjacking, which is a way for cyber criminals to harvest passwords online. So, be observant and notice slight changes in the home or login page of Twitter and other sites. Also, it may be helpful to view the security of the site by clicking on the Page Info. Always stay safe online to avoid fraud.
Challenges To The Core Banking Solutions Implementation Projects – Part 2
This is a sequel to my previous entry, titled “Challenges to the Core Banking Solutions Implementation Projects – 1.”
Continuing on the problems faced in core banking solution implementation projects, let us look at some other problems.
Lack of IT Resources with Banks
Usually, the core banking solution vendors claim to offer lower overheads, advanced technology, lower maintenance costs etc. After all, such claims win the clients and especially their finance people, as they see IT as a big cost center instead of a strategic asset. Vendors are also aware of the fact that the banks will calculate a minimum of five years total cost of ownership (TCO) before they make any decision about a vendor and its solution. If the system requires a large number of IT resources, it will reflect negatively in the TCO spreadsheet. They thus would not recommend the banks to hire the adequate sized IT team. Even if they are forthright about it, the banks may not take the suggestion that seriously, and try to bargain this number. Also, banks are not that big on IT and the trends in software, such as Agile Methodology and other object oriented frameworks. They thus cannot, or find it hard to appreciate the roles of user experience, documentation, quality control and quality assurance engineers. Ironic, isn’t it? During negotiations with the application vendors, the same bank managers vouch to create their own IT team to manage the solution during and after implementation. They ask the vendors to train their teams on the technology and features so that the bank could reduce dependence on the external vendor. Yet they do not hire enough people.
In my experience, I haven’t even heard about a single bank going for ISO 9001:2000 compliance. But don’t be misaken here: a number of banks are very active on IT security and service delivery. While this is a good trend that shows that the IT managers of the banks are waking up to the security threats and service delivery, they are not aware of the software development advancements.
Lack of Experienced Project Managers
A bank changes its core banking system once in decades. Same goe s for any other IT solution that a bank purchses, such as credits, risk management, middleware and the likes. Also, such projects are so large that it is difficult to find project managers from the market with experience of similar sized projects. The project manager is expected to provide insight, skill, communication and foresight to steer the project in the right direction. While a project manager can bring skill and communication, if he/she is not from the banking arena, the foresight, risk management and insight will be missing. A newly inducted project manager will also face issues in taking control of the things because he/she is a new entrant.
Missing Comprehensive Training Programs
This problem hits the implementers and the banks, both, and equally hard. The way banks and implementers lose their IT manpower, there is almost always a dire need of hiring people “yesterday.” New bugs are being pointed out, un-used or un-tested features are brought to operations, requirements are evolving, and new faces are being introduced in the team as older ones are leaving or have left already. Continuous trainings of fresh employees must take high priority in such cases. We have seen that this doesn’t happen. Batches are trained, no doubt, but not in the way they should be. Application vendors and implementers are too stretched to move their consultants from clients to training labs. With banks pressing hard upon delivery and expanding their feature-set at the same time, and the implementing engineers/consultants taking other opportunities, the implementation managers do not do what they must: training, training and more training.
No QC
I haven’t seen many banks with QA people, honestly. And even those who have QA personnel, have up to two people. How can two people possibly do a quality check of the whole banking system? Furthermore, it is highly likely that QC people are picked up from the general IT industry, which means that they may not have the experience of the banking environment and applications. They may not know or understand fully the requirements of a user. Also, it is possible that the QC personnel are hired after the requirements analysis is complete. By that time, it is too late. I am not contending the human ability to learn and act; the QC engineers can still pick things up, but that is only a subset of what they should, and in a very short time span. Ultimately, you would see QC people checking the application for crashes and interface related errors, mostly.
No Stress or Automated Testing
A banking application is supposed to take a large number of users. Add to it the users of Internet Banking, and you see a dramatic number within the usual eight business hours. Since the applications are built with older or proprietary technologies, the choice of tools to stress and load test the applications is very slim. If the application has a web interface, or if it is developed using Oracle Developer, then you have a few options. But because of the tough timeline, and no time for testing, load testing also stays under the radar. Realizing late in the process, banks find it convenient to purchase more hardware horsepower. There is hardly any calculation behind the assessment of the required hardware resources. Thus the limits of the available hardware are never assessed. Also, not using an automated tool makes the users and QC personnel test each newly developed or fixed feature. And when an update/fix/patch is received from the application vendor, people have to test everything again. This is a huge investment of time and resources, which is avoidable by using an automated testing tool.
For web application, we have used IBM Rational Performance Tester, Rational Functional Tester and WebLoad. Creating scripts requires some programming as well.
To be concluded…

The best design solutions for your Wordpress website
Posted by Jon in WordPress templates on October 16, 2009
Six Sources for finding the best design solutions for your Wordpress website.
Free WordPress Themes directory is the most important Wordpress themes provider. Here you can find the newest themes, plugins and news about wordpress.
WordPress Themes Archive has gathered over 2000 free wordpress themes and, excluding the directory which allows the preview of each individual themes, provides a file containing all the themes, a file which has nearly 400 mb and which can be downloaded directly from the website as an archive (in zip or tar.gz) or with a torrent client. If you don’t want the whole collection, just download the themes that you are interested in; the files are available for themes with a column, 2, 3 or 4 columns.
There are also disadvantages; would you expect everything to be perfect? The theme doesn’t allow too many criteria for sorting – only category, color and positioning of the sidebar and is quite time consuming to navigate through more than 100 pages. In addition, almost any theme downloaded contains an additional link, paid advertising for an online store, in one of the footer or sidebars. Not that it would be too difficult to remove that link! Last but not least, a rather important omission is that there’s no link to the home page theme, meaning you don’t have any idea if the theme is working correctly on your version of wordpress and you also don’t know if any updates have occurred for this wordpress theme.
Smashingmagazine presents 100 free high-quality WordPress themes. The team of Smashingmagazine has carefully selected among hundreds of designs and themes, which have been manually selected, installed and tested over the last weeks. All the wordpress themes can be downloaded, customized and used for free in both personal and commercial projects. Links to demo-versions provide a direct preview of a theme. In other article, they said that you can explore a gallery with 83 free Wordpress Themes which probably you haven’t seen yet. All themes offer quality, elegance and a user-friendly interface.
Top WordPress Themes is a collection of top themes, selected by columns (2 or 3 columns) or by author. All the themes are free and the disadvantage is that you can’t sort by colors or category (like business, personal page, etc.)
Wordpress Themes Base offers you a collection of fresh Wordpress themes. They praise to bring you the most fresh, appealing, and unique wordpress themes. The collection contains a sufficient number of Wordpress Themes. A wide choice of Wordpress Themes will help you to pick the right one for your needs. At Wordpress Themes Base you will find creative approaches based upon a simple Wordpress template and the most amazing designs and nonstandard layout solutions. All WordPress Themes are absolutely free and can be used for personal or commercial purposes. At times design-communities give in public use unique WordPress Themes that offer high quality, elegance and a user-friendly interface.
WP Themes 360 is a huge directory for wordpress themes. The principle is simple, you must choose a theme from 32 pages with 50 templates per page. When you navigate to this directory, your eyes automatically select the best wordpress theme on the page. You can play with the themes using the “randomize” button. The game is called “Try Randomize!” and you can create unique and fresh selection of themes.
