Internet Marketing is Business, not Just Search Engine Algorithms

Not two weeks ago I had a chat with someone (an SEO) about some online media buying and although the figures made an infinite amount of sense (6 figure monthly page views – prime location banner purchase for less than £90 per month!), he said, “but there is no SEO value from the banner link” (it was JavaScript)! Astonished, I spent the next hour arguing the case for buying the coverage, but it would seem that the majority of SEOs just don’t see the value of applying traditional marketing techniques to the web – they just don’t “fit” into the SEO mindset.

What is really bizarre though is that while the optimisation industry doesn’t see the value in some less search engine focused marketing techniques, they will pay a veritable fortune for paid links. The likes of ReviewMe (http://www.reviewme.com) change up to $250 for a single “review” (which is SEO speak for a plain text link not so subtly hidden in a purpose written article). One text link. One! Not just that, but a single text link on a new page that has no PR (and will maybe only will ever receive minimal PR filtered through from other page links)!

For that $250 (around £150) there are so many different options you could aim for. While a lot won’t have any direct SEO benefit, we still need to consider traffic and branding benefits.

$250 would allow me to buy banner advertising on a niche site / forum / blog for a limited amount of time. Depending on the type of site and its subject area you could be looking at a decent amount of traffic, enquiries and exposure – certainly enough to justify the cost.

An alternative would be to spend the money on a directory listing on a site such as TheBestOf (http://www.thebestof.co.uk) – £10 per month for a year and you get a full page listing (written by your local contact), an audio advert where you can pitch your service, inclusion in a high traffic site and a direct (SEO friendly!) link back to your site. A link AND qualified traffic – that’s like SEO Christmas!

Online marketing professionals do focus on SEO a lot and that isn’t a bad thing – it just isn’t the only thing and you should be looking to spend your budget wisely and spread your marketing scope.

7 Things You Need To Do To Optimize Your Blog For The Search Engines

Optimizing your blog for the search engines is crucial and very important! There are so many different blogs out there on the net that you’ll quickly sink to the bottom if you don’t optimize. Follow these seven tips below and you’ll be well on your way to high rankings.

#1 – Create the Right Permalink Structure

The permalinks Wordpress uses by default are not search engine friendly. You can make this simple change by inserting %postname% instead of the default that is already there. This will successfully create URL’s that include your post name which should include your targeted keywords.

#2 – Install All in One SEO Plugin

This is a must-have plugin which allows you to specify a title, description, and the keywords for the search engines. It can really help you boost up and reach the top of the listings, whereas the standard WP installation can fall short.

#3 – Install Related Posts Plugin

Search engines love it when they get content pages that are interlinked. It also works very well for the search engines. It will automatically include links to other posts that are similar. Very convenient!

#4 – Research your Keywords

When people search, they search by keyword. It is vital that you know what these keywords are if you want to rank at the top of the search engines. Your posts should be centered around these keywords.

#5 – Include Your Keywords in the Title

In the title of your blog you need to include your main keyword. Also, include your main keyword and select others in the titles of your posts and sprinkle throughout your pages.

#6 – Make Your Blog Easy to Navigate

Easy navigation is essential for your guests and the search engines as it makes it easier for the guests. That means including your blog’s categories, recent posts (to make sure they get indexed) and pages. Easy navigation is also part of choosing a good design.

#7 – Expand the Ping List

When you make a new blog post Wordpress will “ping” the blog search engines. This alerts them that content on your site has changed and ready for guests to view. This can help you get indexed fast so you can start making money even faster. Do a Google search to find an expanded ping list you can include in your wp-admin so you make sure you get as many of these sites to update you as possible.

Using these seven plugins will make your job of ranking highly in the search engines easier than ever. If you’re new to blogging with Wordpress then these terms may seem incredibly strange to you right now. As you study them and go over them a couple times, put them into action and it will start to feel like second nature!

Get To The Top Of Search Engine Rankings – Learn Low From ‘The Blog and Ping Tutorial’

Internal linking is one such strategy where blogs can be made to rank higher in search engines. Here you leave links on your blogs which take you to pages within your website. A refined linking structure is hugely beneficial. It helps you rank high in search engines and your website is made better from the perspective of the user.

Once of the recently popular mechanism for promoting blogs on search engines is the blog and ping method. In the world of blogging, there is a push mechanism based on XML-RPC where a server is informed about the update of contents by the weblog. A list of new and updated blogs featuring new content is then generated on more than one ‘ping servers’ through the XML-RPC signal. Every time a new post is created by the blogger; the servers are pinged in an automatic manner by the blog authoring tools.

Web services can subscribe to recently pinged blog lists on servers such as Weblogs.com and VeriSign’s that are open ping servers. The main aspect to be noted here is that only the latest updated blogs are polled in a swift manner by search engines which provide fresh results. Subscribers are notified by aggregators with the help of the ping servers regarding availability of fresh material.

Proprietary ping servers on the other hand use information obtained only for their own benefit. This is the reason why a lot of blog search engines operate their own ping servers. With no incentive or benefit whatsoever, proprietary servers have no reason to share with other servers their ping data as they are actually competitors.

Services such as Ping-o-matic offer bloggers an opportunity to ping data to multiple proprietary servers simultaneously. Ping-o-matic automatically updates search engines that have been updated by your blog. This service also periodically checks downstream services for legitimacy and proper functioning. These are some of the most important services taken care of by them.

It is very important to avoid indiscriminate pinging and ping only services that are relevant. This will ensure there is no burden on the service provider.

Blog and Ping is thus an online marketing term which uses the pingback service for search engine indexing and content or site delivery aiming for profit. Blogging and pinging is a swift and effective method which is quite valuable. It helps spider your site and bring it into prominence. The crawler is also brought back more often with this method.

It is a simple enough process too. An effective tutorial can teach you how to blog and ping successfully to bring your blog to prominence in search engines thereby improving your chances of reaching out to a large number of audience. Your business links in these blogs can lead valuable prospects to your website thereby increasing your sales.

Here are a few aspects you have to keep in mind as you use the Blog and Ping method for marketing –
•Go through the Blog and ping tutorials, these provide step by step instructions on how to go about the process.
•If you are planning on blog automation, it is necessary to set blog posts with at least a thirty minute gap. This is necessary to ensure blog directories accept your posts.
•It is highly recommended not to post blogs more than twice a day as you are using Blogger even if you ping your blog only once. This will be a danger signal you send to search engines, especially Google.

Pings are being legitimately accepted by Google Blog Search Pinging service. For best results, every time you ping a post, they appear in Google’s blog search. Pinging can be done in two ways –

1.Manual Ping – Here, all you need to do is to visit the blog search site of google and update your blog URL every time you post a blog.
2.Automatic Ping – It is possible to automatically set WordPress to ping Google during every blog update.

How to Optimize your WordPress Blog for the Search Engines

There are millions of WordPress blogs on the internet, but the majority of them are not optimized for the search engines. This article explains 7 ways that you can make your WordPress blog more search engine friendly.

1. Ensure that your permalinks settings are set up in an optimal manner – whenever you publish a blog post it will have a permanent URL known as a “permalink”. By default the WordPress permalink setting is not optimal but you can easily edit this by clicking on the Settings->Permalinks menu in the WordPress dashboard and then use a custom setting http://yourdomainname.com/category/postname. This will mean that your blog post category and title will appear in the URL rather than a number.

2. Install the All in One SEO Pack (or a another similar plugin) – the All in One SEO Pack plugin allows you to add a custom title, meta description and keyword tags for your home page and blog posts.

3. Optimize each blog post for a low competition long tail keyword phrase – before you make a blog post take some time to do a little keyword research. Visit the Google Adwords Keyword tool and use this to find a long tail keyword phrase that has a low amount of competition. Ideally this phrase will have just a few hundred monthly searches rather than a few thousand monthly searches. Use a different keyword phrase for every blog post that you make and put the keyword phrase in the blog post title and 2-3 times throughout the post.

4. Use Social Bookmarking services to bookmark each blog post – whenever you post to your blog use a social bookmarking service e.g. Digg or StumbleUpon. There are also services such as OnlyWire and SocialMarker that will let you submit your site to multiple bookmarking services at the same time. Social bookmarking can get you additional traffic to your blog and give you a backlink to your blog post.

5. Optimize the home page of your blog – it is normal for the home page of your blog to get more traffic then any of the other pages. You can increase the number of visitors even more by optimizing your home page. Pick 1-2 keyword phrases for your home page using a keyword research tool such as the Google Adwords keyword tool and choose one or two phrases that are related to your niche. Ideally these phrases should get a few thousand searches per month and the competition shouldn’t be too tough. Ensure that you include these keyword phrases are mentioned in the TITLE tag, meta description and throughout the permanent content of your blog home page.

6. Install the Google XML Sitemaps plugin – this won’t increase your search engine rank, but having a sitemap will help to ensure that the search engines index all the posts and pages of your blog. The Google XML sitemaps plugin will help you to quickly and easily generate a sitemap and keep it up to date.

7.Build links to your blog – building backlinks to your blog is one of the best ways to increase your search engine ranking, If you don’t do this it is unlikely that you will get any decent level of traffic from the search engines. You can build links using article marketing, directory submission, forum posting, commenting on other blogs, press releases, link exchange and social bookmarking.
