The Importance of Mastering Good Design Principles

One of the most important rules of good web design is to give visitors clear directions to navigate or move around on your website.
I must admit, I personally like the menu bars that reveal sub menus when you hover with your mouse over a bar, but I also find that many times these “instant” menus keep me going from one page to the other and in the end I forget why I actually went to the site in the first place. In most instances, I just leave the site.
Keep your main navigation menu simple so that your visitors can easily go to another part of your website. You can then provide text links to sub pages and more information.
A picture paints a thousand words and images can be useful to enhance the look of your website. However, too many graphics or images can make your web pages look cluttered and distract your visitors from your original purpose of selling your product.
Too many images can also cause your web site to load slowly and if visitors have to wait too long, they will usually leave your site before they had a chance to see what you have to offer them. When you use images on your site, you should always use a good image-editing program that will not only reduce the file size but also ensure that the image still looks good.
A very important point to remember when you want to present your visitors with information is that they do not want to struggle through long paragraphs and huge blocks of text. Implement white space by splitting your paragraphs into shorter ones, use subheads and text bullets. Make it easy for your visitor to read and to take in the information you want to impart.
Another important thing to remember is that all web browsers do not display websites in the same way. Your website can look great in Firefox but users of Internet Explorer or Opera may see lots of blank spaces or posts that disappear inexplicable and when this happens, they will leave your site.
Make sure that your website is cross-browser compatible. If you know that there is a problem with some or all of your web pages, you can find valuable help on fixing this by visiting and asking for help in forums.
Try to keep the use of scripting languages on your site to a minimum. Although scripting languages can be useful in data management, it should not be used to create visual effects on your website. Scripts not only slow down the loading time of your website but can even cause browsers to crash. As scripts are also not compatible with all the browsers, it may result in a loss of visitors to your site.
An easy way to style all the elements on your website and saving you time and work is to use CSS when you create your own website.
It is good practice to master web design principles even if you just create one page websites. The look of your website can be crucial to the success of your online business.
