It does it automatically. You can control how many blog posts are displayed on your home page under Settings > Reading
I believe you can control how your posts are archived under Settings > Permalinks.
If you know about code you can edit the sidebar.php to format your Archives more. Wordpress has excellent documentation on editing the themes. http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags

Why, you don’t want them to show on your homepage. You can always set a page as your homepage using your reading settings.
Also if your homepage is long because of posts, edit some of the posts and use the “read more” function, this should minimize some space on your homepage. Are you using a self-hosted blog?
I teach folks how to install them and use them. Just wondering if you need more help than you are getting.
